Assessing Pelvic Health With Real Time Ultrasound

Pelvic floor dysfunction is a common but often underdiagnosed conditions affecting a vast amount of people. It encompasses a variety of symptoms including, incontinence, pelvic pain and pelvic organ prolapse.

Pelvic floor conditions are often diagnosed through an internal examination, however there are cases where an internal examination would not be appropriate, if a patient does not wish to have one or for any other reasons. In these cases, the use of Real-Time Ultrasound (RTUS) can be extremely beneficial as it allows us to assess your pelvic floor contractions externally. 

 

What is Real-Time Ultrasound?
Real-time ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce live images of internal body structures. When applied to the pelvic floor it allows us to assess the strength and contractions of individuals pelvic floor.

 

Benefits of using real-time ultrasound for pelvic floor assessment.
1. Non invasive – As mentioned above commonly pelvic floors are assessed internally, the use of this imaging allows those who may not be able to or may not want an internal assessment to still have their pelvic floor concerns investigated further.

2. Patient engagement – The ultrasound provides a unique opportunity for patient education and engagement. By showing patients live images of their pelvic floor, they can get a better understanding of their condition and how their pelvic floor is functioning.

3. Baseline measurements – With the real-time ultrasound we can save snapshots which we can then later compare down the track to measure changes or improvements. It’s a great objective way for both practitioner and patient to measure change.
