Sore Calves?

Calf pain is something we see often at the clinic in patients of all ages and activity levels. Each person's pain is individual and unique to them thus, treatment is individual and tailored towards the needs of each patient. Though in saying this, there are many similarities in the way we may approach someone's calf pain.

What could my calf pain be?

Achilles tendon pain: pain lower in your calf that seems to warm up as you go and is often very sore the following day.

Strain/Tear: a sudden sharp pain in your calf after running or a change of direction movement.

Hypertonia/Tightness: general tightness through the calves from increased use.

Stress fracture: depending on the area and history of your pain it could be a stress fracture in one of your lower leg bones.

Referred pain: Sciatic or other neural compressive conditions can cause referred pain in your calf area.

Lymphoedema: Swelling often accompanied with aching, heaviness and tightness.

Something more sinister: DVT, underlying conditions.
